RDA Gold Coast is proud to introduce Chapter 1 of our special 4-part Sustainable Gold Coast video series, featuring a Queensland pioneer in sustainable steel manufacturing: Neumann Steel.
Headquartered at Currumbin, Neumann Steel has been shaping Australia’s infrastructure since 1970, with major projects such as Gold Coast’s Q1 Tower and Light Rail, and the Toowoomba Range Crossing. But beyond construction, Neumann Steel is building something even greater – a clean, green, sustainable future.
In this broad-ranging interview, RDA Gold Coast's CEO Estella Rodighiero dives into Neumann Steel's origins and sustainability awakening, award-winning innovations and green milestones, absolute commitment to staff safety as well as community well-being, and advice for other Gold Coast businesses at the beginning of their own sustainability journeys.

Neumann Steel was established in 1970 as part of the Neumann Group, founded by the Neumann family. Initially operating under the name Nucast, the company specialised in the manufacturing of precast concrete products. In 1989, Nucast transitioned into Neumann Steel, marking the beginning of a new era of expansion and innovation.
Over the years, Neumann Steel has expanded its operations across Queensland and New South Wales, establishing a strong presence in key locations, including the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Fraser Coast, and the Hunter Region. Through this growth, the company has introduced pioneering products to the Australian market, such as RIBWIRE® deformed wire and RIBMESH® deformed wire fabric, solidifying its reputation as an industry leader in steel innovation.
Neumann Steel has contributed to numerous major infrastructure projects, including iconic developments like the Q1 Tower, Jewel Resort, Gold Coast Light Rail, Coffs Harbour Bypass, and the Toowoomba Range Crossing.
By the late 1990s and early 2000s, global awareness of environmental challenges such as climate change and resource depletion became more pronounced, compelling industries worldwide to prioritise sustainability. Neumann Steel, recognising the growing importance of reducing its environmental footprint, embarked on its sustainability journey. The steel industry, known for high energy consumption and carbon emissions, faced increasing scrutiny from regulators and the public alike. Driven by its commitment to corporate social responsibility and the ethical values of the Neumann family, Neumann Steel viewed sustainability not just as a regulatory obligation, but as a core value integral to its long-term vision.
Neumann Steel's first major step toward sustainability was the adoption of ISO 14001, the international standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS). This laid the foundation for formalising their sustainability commitment, establishing clear objectives, and ensuring regulatory compliance. The company conducted a comprehensive environmental impact assessment to identify areas where it could minimise its environmental impact, leading to a series of initiatives focused on energy efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainable procurement.
Neumann Steel’s sustainability journey is highlighted by several notable milestones:
ISO 14001 Certification: This formalised the company’s environmental objectives, providing a clear framework to manage its sustainability efforts.
Development of NuPod®: A groundbreaking product made from up to 100% recycled plastic, NuPod® provides an alternative to traditional polystyrene waffle pods, reducing plastic waste while offering practical solutions to the construction industry. This innovation earned the 2021 HIA Australian Green Smart Product of the Year award.
Sustainable Procurement: Neumann Steel adopted sustainable procurement practices, sourcing materials and products that meet environmental and ethical standards. The company prioritised local suppliers with strong sustainability credentials, ensuring its supply chain aligned with its broader environmental goals.
Energy Efficiency Upgrades: The company significantly improved energy efficiency through machinery upgrades and optimised production processes, further reducing its environmental footprint.
Waste Reduction Initiatives: A comprehensive waste management system was introduced, focusing on minimising landfill waste through recycling programs, optimised resource use, and employee education on sustainable practices.
Industry Recognition: Neumann Steel’s sustainability efforts have been recognised through numerous prestigious awards, including the HIA Australian Green Smart Product of the Year for NuPod® and the Australian Steel Institute (ASI) Sustainability Awards for its overall commitment to sustainability. Additionally, we have obtained the Sustainability Steel Australia (SSA) Level 3 certification for our Currumbin Branch, SSA Level 2 certification for our Hervey Bay Branch, and SSA Level 2 certification for our Thornton Branch.
Neumann Steel’s approach to sustainability has evolved significantly over the years. Initially driven by regulatory compliance, the company’s focus has broadened to incorporate sustainability into every aspect of its business strategy. Today, Neumann Steel’s sustainability efforts extend beyond environmental initiatives to encompass social responsibility. The company emphasises Workplace Health and Safety (WHS), diversity and inclusion, and community engagement as integral parts of its sustainability framework.
As Neumann Steel continues to innovate, it remains committed to reducing its environmental footprint while creating positive impacts on the community and industry. Sustainability is now embedded in the company’s DNA, shaping its future as a responsible and forward-thinking leader in the steel industry.
