Achievements, recommendations and best practice

Showcasing Neumann Steel's Current Achievements

NuPodNeumann Steel, a leading name in the Australian steel industry, has built a solid reputation for sustainability and innovation. Among its most significant achievements is the development of NuPod, an award-winning product made from Australian recycled plastic. This revolutionary product has transformed the construction of concrete slabs, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional polystyrene waffle pods. By utilising recycled materials, NuPod has not only reduced environmental impact but also positioned Neumann Steel as a pioneer in eco-friendly solutions within the industry.

Impact of these initiatives on Neumann Steel and the environment

The introduction of NuPod has had a far-reaching impact on both the company and the environment. By embracing recycled plastic, NuPod has dramatically reduced the carbon footprint of concrete slab construction. This innovation has reinforced Neumann Steel’s standing as a sustainability leader, while also contributing to industry-wide improvements. The reduced waste and lower emissions from NuPod production and installation processes showcase the company’s dedication to environmental stewardship. Beyond operational efficiencies, these initiatives have bolstered the company’s reputation, attracting clients and partners who value sustainable practices.

Some Key Statistics on Neumann Steel's Innovations

Waste Initiatives Neumann SteelNuPod

  • Around 1000kg of recycled plastic is used in the average 200m2 house slab, saving it from landfill.
  • Carbon emission reduction of at least 50% due to the ability to deliver two products, steel and NuPod void formers, on one truckload for their customers, where previously two loads were required.
  • Concrete waste reduction is due to the ability to calculate usage more accurately and the fact that no trenching excavations are required in the placement for NuPod.

Waste management

  • In the first year of implementation (2019), Neumann Steel reduced their waste costs by 60% and increased their recycling rate to 70%. Today, their recycling rate stands at 95% across all our operations.
  • Implemented waste solutions for steel scrap, comingled materials, cardboard/paper, soft plastics, organic waste, e-waste, batteries and printer cartridges.

Decarbonisation

  • Neumann Steel have successfully lowered their carbon emissions from electricity (scope 2) by 9% over the past five years.
  • The anticipated savings from the new solar system are estimated to cut their energy bills by around 50%.
Future Sustainability Plans

Machinery Looking to the future, Neumann Steel is committed to expanding its sustainability efforts. The company is working on a comprehensive long-term sustainability strategy that addresses Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors, with a key focus on decarbonization. The goal is ambitious: achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

To realise this vision, Neumann Steel plans to:

  • Expand solar PV systems across its facilities, generating more green energy for its operations.
  • Reduce emissions further by enhancing energy efficiency programs and exploring fleet electrification.
  • Develop new products that align with sustainability goals, positioning the company to enter new markets with eco-friendly solutions.

These initiatives will solidify Neumann Steel’s position at the forefront of sustainable practices in the steel industry, setting a benchmark for others to follow.

Recommendations and Best Practices for Other Companies

Neumann Steel’s journey offers valuable lessons and actionable advice for companies looking to enhance their sustainability practices:

Icon11. Innovate with Purpose: Develop products that address both market needs and environmental sustainability. The success of NuPod demonstrates that eco-friendly innovation can drive significant environmental impact while providing commercial benefits.

Icon22. Be Energy Efficient: Adopt energy-efficient practices, such as upgrading equipment, installing solar panels, and implementing energy management systems. Regular maintenance and energy-saving initiatives can lower carbon footprints while cutting operational costs.

Icon33. Improve Waste Management: Review and optimise waste management practices to minimise waste, foster a circular economy, and improve recycling efforts. Sustainable waste management reduces environmental impact and can lead to cost savings.

Icon44. Engage and Educate Employees: Ensure that employees understand how their actions affect the environment. A well-educated workforce can drive more sustainable behaviour at work and in their personal lives, leading to improved efficiency and cost savings. More importantly, it strengthens company culture by aligning employees around shared values and goals.

Icon55. Collaborate for Greater Impact: Partner with other companies, local organisations, and sustainability programs to share knowledge and resources. Collaborations amplify the reach and impact of sustainability efforts. For businesses in Queensland, Neumann Steel recommends leveraging the CCIQ EcoBiz program, a free initiative that helps companies reduce waste, water and energy costs, and encourages behaviour change and process improvements.

By incorporating these best practices, companies can make meaningful progress toward sustainability while also unlocking financial gains. Neumann Steel’s experience demonstrates that aligning business success with environmental responsibility isn’t just good for the community and planet earth — it’s a powerful driver of innovation, profitability and long-term value.
