Sustainability Spotlight: Neumann Steel

Neumann Steel Chapter 1

A brief history of Neumann Steel's Sustainability Journey

Foundation and Growth

img 1970Neumann Steel was established in 1970 as part of the Neumann Group, founded by the Neumann family. Initially operating under the name Nucast, the company specialised in the manufacturing of precast concrete products. In 1989, Nucast transitioned into Neumann Steel, marking the beginning of a new era of expansion and innovation.

Over the years, Neumann Steel has expanded its operations across Queensland and New South Wales, establishing a strong presence in key locations, including the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Fraser Coast, and the Hunter Region. Through this growth, the company has introduced pioneering products to the Australian market, such as RIBWIRE® deformed wire and RIBMESH® deformed wire fabric, solidifying its reputation as an industry leader in steel innovation.

Neumann Steel has contributed to numerous major infrastructure projects, including iconic developments like the Q1 Tower, Jewel Resort, Gold Coast Light Rail, Coffs Harbour Bypass, and the Toowoomba Range Crossing.

Inspiration Behind the Sustainability Journey

InspirationBy the late 1990s and early 2000s, global awareness of environmental challenges such as climate change and resource depletion became more pronounced, compelling industries worldwide to prioritise sustainability. Neumann Steel, recognising the growing importance of reducing its environmental footprint, embarked on its sustainability journey. The steel industry, known for high energy consumption and carbon emissions, faced increasing scrutiny from regulators and the public alike. Driven by its commitment to corporate social responsibility and the ethical values of the Neumann family, Neumann Steel viewed sustainability not just as a regulatory obligation, but as a core value integral to its long-term vision.

Initial Steps Towards Sustainability

ISONeumann Steel's first major step toward sustainability was the adoption of ISO 14001, the international standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS). This laid the foundation for formalising their sustainability commitment, establishing clear objectives, and ensuring regulatory compliance. The company conducted a comprehensive environmental impact assessment to identify areas where it could minimise its environmental impact, leading to a series of initiatives focused on energy efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainable procurement.

Key Milestones in Sustainability

NupodNeumann Steel’s sustainability journey is highlighted by several notable milestones:

ISO 14001 Certification: This formalised the company’s environmental objectives, providing a clear framework to manage its sustainability efforts.

Development of NuPod®: A groundbreaking product made from up to 100% recycled plastic, NuPod® provides an alternative to traditional polystyrene waffle pods, reducing plastic waste while offering practical solutions to the construction industry. This innovation earned the 2021 HIA Australian Green Smart Product of the Year award.

Sustainable Procurement: Neumann Steel adopted sustainable procurement practices, sourcing materials and products that meet environmental and ethical standards. The company prioritised local suppliers with strong sustainability credentials, ensuring its supply chain aligned with its broader environmental goals.

Energy Efficiency Upgrades: The company significantly improved energy efficiency through machinery upgrades and optimised production processes, further reducing its environmental footprint.

Waste Reduction Initiatives: A comprehensive waste management system was introduced, focusing on minimising landfill waste through recycling programs, optimised resource use, and employee education on sustainable practices.

Industry Recognition: Neumann Steel’s sustainability efforts have been recognised through numerous prestigious awards, including the HIA Australian Green Smart Product of the Year for NuPod® and the Australian Steel Institute (ASI) Sustainability Awards for its overall commitment to sustainability. Additionally, we have obtained the Sustainability Steel Australia (SSA) Level 3 certification for our Currumbin Branch, SSA Level 2 certification for our Hervey Bay Branch, and SSA Level 2 certification for our Thornton Branch.
